Empowering entrepreneurs isn’t just about supporting individuals or small and growing businesses (SGBs)—it’s about creating systems where innovators can flourish. When problem solvers have the right tools, their success ripples out, sparking job creation, local economic growth, sustainable development, and social progress.
During Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW), from November 18 until the 24, EcoMap partnered with the Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs (ANDE) to spotlight how ecosystem intelligence is reshaping entrepreneurship on a global scale. Together, we are building a future where every entrepreneur can access the support needed to succeed and drive lasting change through our dynamic ecosystem maps. ANDE is part of the Aspen Institute, a global nonprofit organization committed to realizing a free, just, and equitable society.
Driving Ecosystem Intelligence
Since 2015, ANDE has conducted comprehensive landscape studies and ecosystem mappings to uncover and connect resources for entrepreneurs. However, in 2018, partnering with EcoMap catalyzed this mission, making the mappings more dynamic and accessible.
“The real value of EcoMap lies in its dynamic, regularly updated mappings that enhance connectivity and visibility within an ecosystem,” said Abby Davidson, Director of Research and Impact at ANDE. “This is crucial for effectively supporting entrepreneurs and understanding their potential pathways, from university incubator programs to accelerators and grant funding.”
Tailored Support for Unique Contexts
Entrepreneurs in the developing economies where ANDE works face significant challenges—from limited access to finance to navigating complex ecosystems that aren’t designed for their success. Addressing these obstacles requires a flexible approach that considers diverse cultural and economic contexts.
“The key is that the support is tailored to be ecosystem-specific,” Davidson emphasized. “Our member organizations adapt their programs to address the most pressing needs and leverage the available resources in each unique context. This ensures entrepreneurs receive relevant and effective support that aligns with their environment.”
Impactful Collaborations in Action
EcoMap and ANDE’s joint efforts have launched impactful ecosystem maps in Ghana, Ethiopia, Kenya, South Africa, and India, with new expansions into Mozambique and Sierra Leone. The results speak for themselves.
In India, the world’s third-largest entrepreneurial ecosystem, this partnership has mapped 140 organizations dedicated to sustainable startups, connecting entrepreneurs with vital resources. This mapping is part of a broader roadmap to harness India’s entrepreneurial spirit to tackle climate challenges—linking cleantech incubators and eco-focused investors to foster scalable climate solutions.
In Ghana, EcoMap and ANDE have revealed a robust support network, mapping 141 organizations and 218 programs aiding local entrepreneurs. Strong sectors like Agriculture & Food, Financial Services, and ICT showcase the ecosystem’s strengths, while growth opportunities are identified in Health, Energy, and Environment. This year alone, more than 4,000 visitors engaged with the map, demonstrating the demand for this vital information.
A Vision for Locally-Driven Innovation
The ability to map these evolving ecosystems impacts policymaking, enhances connections for entrepreneurs, and addresses pressing local and global issues. Davidson sees the future of global entrepreneurship as entrepreneur-led and community-driven, building innovation from within and recognizing that local leadership is essential for creating tailored solutions.
This vision starts with empowering entrepreneurs—providing them with the ecosystem intelligence to grow, thrive, and lead transformative change.
