Forge North is a platform of the GREATER MSP Partnership, the region’s inclusive cross-sector economic development partnership. Ben Ihde, coordinator at Forge North, shares how its EcoMap-powered MSP Startup Guide is transforming the landscape for founders, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds.
The MSP Startup Guide has become an important resource for founders seeking venture capital in our region. One of its most impactful features is a sidebar guide that provides a comprehensive list of all Minneapolis-St. Paul-based venture capital firms in one easily accessible link. This centralized information source allows anyone to quickly share VC resources with founders, and it’s simple for users to update or add information, ensuring that the guide remains current and comprehensive.
What is the most significant shift you have been able to make in funding access since implementing the MSP Startup Guide?
At Forge North, our mission is to increase early-stage access to capital and improve racial equity in the Minneapolis–St. Paul region. The MSP Startup Guide plays a vital role in leveling the playing field for all founders, especially those who might face time constraints due to other commitments.
Many founders are juggling multiple responsibilities, such as working two jobs or caring for family members. These commitments often prevent them from attending networking events where they could meet VCs and other potential supporters. The digital nature of the MSP Startup Guide allows these founders to access critical information during brief windows of free time, whether it’s during a coffee break or after putting their children to bed.
As I learn about new resources, I add them to the guide. We’re also encouraging more founders and ecosystem supporters to contribute information. This collaborative approach ensures that the guide remains a comprehensive and up-to-date resource, helping to democratize access to startup support in our region.
How has the Guide supported Forge North/Greater MSP’s mission?
The implementation of the MSP Startup Guide, along with EcoMap’s continuous platform improvements, has allowed us to refocus our efforts on more strategic initiatives. For instance, we’re looking forward to implementing EcoBot as a navigator to shorten the path between a founder and the tools they need.
A great example of this shift is how we’re utilizing a recent grant from the state of Minnesota. Instead of hiring a single, overworked navigator to support half the state’s population on business development, we’re partnering with organizations that have established relationships in underserved communities. We’re focusing on improving the quality and accessibility of information available to founders, which in turn accelerates their path to revenue, investment, and impact.
